Dear Friends of Tot Lot,

Do you remember the first time you walked down the wood boards to Tot Lot?

The first time I walked down those wooden planks it was dusk. I could just make out the parent built playground out front with all kinds of parts of all things imaginable, a wondrous place for a child's imagination. I would guess these "structures" were not "up to code" or likely not even 100% safe but being a child of the late 70's it felt familiar.
When I walked into the building, all the rooms were bright and alive for the silent auction fundraiser. I had been invited by a friend to come check it out and maybe even bid on something. My daughter was two at the time and was in a family daycare but this space was amazing, I wanted her to go here immediately. Just like the playground nothing was to code, there were lofts and cubbies and ramps and peek holes...but it was so familiar to the childhood I had. The space was a child's wonderland for imagination. I knew I had to get my daughter in....
For a little history on how we got to the space you see now: In 2003 the roof was leaking everywhere and the building was deemed unsafe. The Tot Lot community banded together (as we always do!), and kicked off the "Raise the Roof" Campaign. Though Tot Lot spent some time in a temporary location: the teachers and community stuck together and made it work for 3+ years while work was done to completely renovate 65R Chestnut St.

The new space was (and still is) the impressive, bright, flexible, accessible, and functional place we see today. The center is up to code and safe for everyone. The community in those years gave us the Tot Lot center we see today. But more importantly, they gave Tot Lot a future and they didn't give up when it looked grim.

As with any property, the repairs don't just stop. In the years since the complete renovation the roof has needed more attention to make it the extra play space we see today. Other things need regular maintenance and repair, and we've also undertaken several capital improvement projects. New sliders were installed in both classrooms to make sure the outside is as much a part of the classrooms as possible (as well as keep out drafts). Most recently, we replaced those walkway boards with bricks (no more slippery wood in the winter!)

This year's Annual Appeal is focused on making sure funds for these jobs continue to be available when we need them. Your tax-deductible donation this year will be replenishing the "rainy day" account, for the yearly upkeep but also the next big repairs that will need attention. Please ask your employer if they match donations to double your impact as well as sharing this appeal widely with grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends and other extended family.

You have been sent this because the Tot Lot community has included you and/or a child you love dearly. Please let us know of any alumni with whom you have stayed in contact with as we are hoping to organize a few alumni events. Please help to guarantee a future space where this beautiful community can continue to grow!

Thank you,

Briana, parent of Marly (class of 2005), Calvin (class of 2017) and Thomas (likely class of 2019) and also toddler teacher (2003-2006)
